SCAD presents “Sole Soul,” an M.F.A. thesis exhibition by AMIS (M.F.A. painting). The artist presents recent works that explore the shoe as a symbolic vessel through sculptural applications of paint. The artist creates serial paintings of shoes, repeating the motif through the entirety of his thesis exhibition.
In his vibrant, expressive paintings, AMIS explores existential questions of aesthetic, ethical and religious progression of the human condition. These philosophical ideas, found in the writings of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, are expressed through the artist’s handling of paint, moving from recognizable imagery into abstracted portraits of individuals through his chosen motif. His symbol, the shoe, is humble and quotidian, but varies widely in the type of footwear chosen by individual wearers.
This exhibition is free and open to the public.
