Something else is what hasn’t been defined yet. It is uncertainty. Something is still finding its definition. It can’t be categorized and has to put it aside. It is confusion. It could thrive or decline. It is a middle place between something and nothing. Painting is not only in the physical aspect but also in the spiritual. It is a conversation between the work and the artist. The method and the materials are not the most important thing. Every material has its limitation. Touching is an important experience to view a fiber art while painting is more about a visual experience. The exhibition is finding the answer to what are we really making? Is it something, nothing or something else? Maybe back to an old question – are we painting or crafting?
Jia Zeng (b.1995, Xiamen, China) received a B.F.A in painting in 2018 summer from Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA. She has travelled to Hong Kong and France over the past year, showing her work in Savannah and Lacoste. Her painting deals with emotions, using metaphorical and poetic perception. She combines the fiber elements and the found objects in weaving and her small work. Zeng will be moving back to her home country in 2018 fall.
