April 21 – May 7 – Alexander Hall Gallery
668 Indian St., Savannah, GA

Opening reception: Tonight, Friday, April 21, 2017, 6–8 p.m.

SCAD presents “Whispers,” a thesis exhibition by Ying Chen (M.F.A. painting) featuring new paintings, drawings, artist books and variable sculptural installations. Chen’s work is a study in the transformation of the everyday and banal. She creates ethereal sculptures using throwaway materials — such as toilet paper and newspapers — to explore the frailty of identity, position and social standing. Simple, labored and repetitive acts, such as the unwrapping, dyeing, and re-wrapping of many rolls of toilet paper, transform the ubiquitous into lush and unexpected new forms.

Ying Chen was born in China. She earned an M.F.A. in visual communication design from the School of Design at Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China, before moving to the U.S. in 2012 to research creative graphics and their application. During that time, she began making art using found objects, including printed and painted silk, paper and mechanical goods.
